Winemaking in Georgia

Winemaking

main-img-traditions img-2

Wine production is one of the main sectors of the Georgian economy, which
is closely
connected with national culture and identity.

There are from 400 to 500 autochthonous (indigenous) grape varieties in Georgia, but white Rkatsiteli grapes and black Saperavi grapes are by far the most common. Despite the growing share of dry wines in world production, a significant share of the production of Georgian winemakers still consists of naturally semi-sweet wines like Khvanchkara and Kindzmarauli.

TBILISI

main-img-traditions img-2

Founded in the 5th century AD by Vakhtang Gorgasali, king of Iberia, Tbilisi became the capital in the 6th century. The city is the most important
industrial, social and cultural center of Georgia. It is also an important transit hub for global energy and trade projects. Strategically located at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, along the historic Silk Road, Tbilisi has repeatedly been a bone of contention between various forces in the Caucasus. The history of the city can be studied by its architecture — starting with the spacious Rustaveli Avenue and ending with the narrow streets preserved from the early Middle Ages in the Narikala district.
